5 Halloween activities that won’t break the bank

With Halloween only a couple of weeks away, it’s time to start planning activities for the kids! Costumes can be expensive but you don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy outfits that are only worn once, then thrown away. Here’s 5 activities that are fun for all the family and won’t break the bank!

Make your own costumes cheaply

It’s amazing what you can make with an old suit jacket. Pay a visit to your local charity shop and pick up an old suit jacket. It should only cost you a few pounds. Make a few tears using a pair of scissors or a sharp blade, get the kids to help (scissors only for the kids), the scruffier it looks the better.

This can be turned into a zombie jacket by adding a few splodges of green and red craft paint. Alternatively, you can turn it into a scary scientist jacket.

Pick up a couple of old white sheets whilst you’re in the charity shop and make these into ghostly figures by popping them over your head and cutting out a couple of eye holes. Cheaper still if you have an old sheet at home!

You can also use black bin liners for witches capes, just cut down the sides and open out the bag, then chop some zig zag pieces from the bottom of the bag. Use some large pieces of card and roll them to make a pointed witches hat. Sellotape it together and then decorate it by cutting moon and start shapes from a roll of tin foil and sticking them on with a glue stick..

Decorate your house to look like a witches and wizards cavern

You don’t need to go overboard, you can do just one room if you like! Cut up some egg cartons and grab a bag of coloured pipe cleaners, make some egg carton scary spiders by threading the pipe cleaners through the egg cartons, to look like legs.

Using felt tip pens, draw some eyes and a few scary looking teeth, then thread cotton through the top and hang them all around the room. Make some foam halloween tombstones and prop them up against the walls.

Play lots of Halloween games

Here’s 3 to start with:

Mr Bones relay race

Black cat treasure hunt

Witches Stew game

Bake something delicious

Gory Gingerbread men are very easy to make and the kids can help to decorate them with icing and red food colouring for the blood.

Make some face masks

Buy a pack of coloured card from a stationery shop and a bag of mixed craft pieces for decoration. Cut out different shapes from the card, like cats faces with pointed ears or bats with bat wings sticking out at the side. Be as creative as you like! Make some small holes in the side and thread some elastic through, tie the ends together in a knot at the back of the mask and decorate with felt pens, stickers, what ever you have lying around. If you’re feeling very adventurous you could try making a paper mache mask. Have lots of fun!
